On October 31, 1879, George M. Noble purchased the Herington locality from the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway company. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railroad finally came to Herington. Herington is only a few minutes from the historic Sante Fe Trail and Council Grove.
